Nicholas Hirshon is a college professor and former reporter for the New York Daily News. He wrote the 2010 book “Images of America: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum,” the first volume on the premier sports and entertainment arena on Long Island. He is now researching his second book, “Images of America: Forest Hills,” on the New York City neighborhood where the U.S. Open tennis tournament was long held.

While working for the Daily News from 2005 to 2011, Hirshon’s coverage of historic sites in the borough of Queens earned him a Friend from the Media Award from a prominent preservation group, the Historic Districts Council. He penned three well-received series for the Daily News on Queens’ past, sparking efforts to landmark or post signage at notable sites.

His work has also appeared in the Colorado Springs Gazette, Contra Costa (Calif.) Times, DNAinfo.com, Halifax Chronicle-Herald, Hockey News, Long Island Press, Montreal Gazette, Naples (Fla.) Daily News, New York Amsterdam News, The New York Times, San Luis Obispo (Calif.) Tribune, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tampa Tribune, Queens (N.Y.) Courier, Queens (N.Y.) Ledger and Yahoo! Sports.

An alumnus of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Hirshon teaches journalism at LaGuardia Community College and St. John’s University, both in Queens. He serves as lead moderator to the St. John’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
